Playing God

I've always liked strategy games like Populous and Black & White where you play a nearly all-powerful being and try to make the simulated people do your bidding, conquer other gods, etc. However, I just don't have the same kind of time and energy that I used to have for these things.

A few years ago, when I was re-reading the Belgariad series by David Eddings, an idea struck me: What about making a game that didn't require any (or at least not too much) input from the player? I've been thinking about this for a while now and I kind of like the idea.

My thought is that the game would run as your desktop background. Whenever you were a little bored during the day, you could peek in to see how your people were doing, maybe grant a few prayers (if you're a nice god) or demand sacrifice (if you're not), cause a flood -- whatever. And maybe once a day there would be a little synopsis of what went on it the world for you to read. ("Blind man cured miraculously!" -- "Floods leave hundreds homeless!" -- "Priests call for more 'volunteers'", etc.)

Right now, this write-up is about as much of the game as there is. (Writing new stuff for fun is at the bottom of the TODO list right now.) However, if you have ideas, drop me a line.
